MONTHLY CLUB ROUND UP (JANUARY '24)

We are back with the first club round-up of 2024 🎉

It was great to welcome everyone back to the club after the Christmas break, and with all classes resuming across the judo club, our community sessions and schools, we are well and truly back into the swing of things. With some competitive action at this year's Scottish Open, plus a lot of hard work and fun happening on the mats, January has been a strong start to 2024. We're looking forward to keeping the momentum going and continuing to help our members, club and community grow throughout the year!

The sportscotland National Centre in Largs hosted the first competition of the year: the 2024 Scottish Open. This popular event brings international competition to home soil, attracting players from Japan, USA, France and Sweden!

We had players competing across the weekend in the cadets, juniors, seniors and masters categories. Cadets and Masters took to the mat first on Saturday 20th, with our younger players gaining invaluable experience as they faced new opponents and new challenges at an event of this level. In the Masters category, Gav M was in the hunt to retain his Scottish Open title, coming up against a strong Frenchman in the -100KG final to take silver.

It was then time for the Juniors and Seniors to step up on the Sunday. Hazel T bagged a spot on the podium after a strong performance throughout the day, claiming the bronze medal in the -78KG category. The -73KG final was an all EdinburghJudo affair, with Ollie and Alex Short battling it out to take the top spot on the podium. The two left it all on the mat in an exciting high-tempo contest, with Ollie coming out on top after throwing his brother to secure the gold medal.

Thanks to JudoScotland for a good start to the competitive year with the Scottish Open; providing our players the opportunity to set their training goals and aspirations for the rest of the year and beyond! Congratulations again to the following players,

SENIORS:

Ollie S -73KG: Gold

Alex S -73KG: Silver

Hazel T -78KG: Bronze
