Edinburgh Judo

Edinburgh Judo is the home of ‘the Gentle Way’ in Edinburgh and it’s surrounding areas, and we have promoted excellence and growth in judo from grassroots to Olympic level since our foundation in 1965.

The Club

Our main hub is in St. Margaret’s House, Meadowbank and we have many active members with ages ranging from 3 to 65 as well as satellite classes in local primary and secondary schools. We believe in the power of sport, and in particular, Judo, to change lives and its ability to create engaging, confident, well-rounded people. Our club ethos is that of friendship, effort and personal improvement in a warm, safe environment and of enabling the community to access not only sport, but also the benefits that a healthy lifestyle can bring.

Our Mission

To introduce judo to children and adults of all ages and abilities in a fun and dynamic way, offering all members avenues of opportunity through which they can have a life-long enjoyment of judo. Edinburgh Judo aims to deliver the very best coaching to all our members within a safe and accessible environment. Judo is a unique sport:

  • All age groups can take part

  • All genders can take part

  • Most disabled persons can take part

  • It is inexpensive

  • It is a year-round activity

But most of all, people do Judo because it’s FUN!

More Than A Sport

At EdinburghJudo, everyone is family. A club can bring much more to a community than the sport itself. It unites people. It creates a vision, a purpose and a common goal. As Nelson Mandela said; ‘Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite the world in a way that little else does’. At EdinburghJudo we encourage people to engage in community, to grow, develop and become good people. We teach people how to cope with winning and losing in life, and to understand how it shapes their choices; their ability to be resilient and bounce back from setbacks; their character, their values; and their courage.

Club of Champions

We are affiliated to BritishJudo and JudoScotland, the recognised governing body for the Olympic sport of Judo within Great Britain. Billy Cusack is our Head Coach and Director of Coaching. Billy has coached players at every Olympics since 1992 (where he competed himself). He has over 30 years of coaching experience, from  grassroots, right through to training the Scottish and GB athletes at the top-level; Europeans, Worlds, Commonwealths and Olympic Games. He has consistently produced players that compete on the world stage. One of our long-time members, Sally Conway, coached by Billy, won a bronze medal in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games!
